Yang's!!

I think I've mentioned earlier, but Adam's go-to site for all Shanghai review information was TripAdvisor.com.  He was insistent that we tried the restaurants ranked highly on this site.  I didn't disagree, but he was obsessed with one in particular because the reviews were so strong... you have not been to Shanghai if you have not had Yang's Fry Dumplings, etc, etc.

So, one night we made a point to find this place.  All the reviews were a little shaky and inconsistent on the location, but we set out with most common listing.  We took the metro 2 stations to Nanjing West Rd. and found the street that the place was on, but could not find the number.  It appeared to be located in the hole of a construction pit... We walked around for about an hour and were starved.. Adam grabbed a smoothie and I tried some local noodles - super ramen I would call it!  Bummed that we couldn't find it we headed home.

The next evening, Adam wouldn't let it go, we headed back to the same spot to look around again.  There are lots of restaurants and shops around this area, but often places are hard to find unless you know where to look because they are tucked away in the back of a mall or a basement or metro stop!  After covering much of the same ground as the day before, I suggested we look in this one last shopping center.... we took the escalator up and there it was ... in bright pink... Yang's Fried Dumpling!
Finally found it!
Frying up the goodness

packed!
So we get to Yang's and, as we read there would be, there is a line out the door.  We had read up on the situation so we knew what to do.  First, get in line at the cashier and place your order... of course this was difficult given our limited language skills, luckily the menu on the wall had English words and there was a nice young person ahead of us that helped us confirm our order.  Then you get in the line by the kitchen to pick up your food.  While Adam waited in line, I started scoping out the tables - its a first come first serve, sit next to a stranger, bring your own napkins and beverage (which we will remember next time) type of place.  So when someone gets up, don't wait for the table to be cleaned, snatch it up.  I found us a spot and waited in anticipation.  I've had many other types of dumplings and buns but was excited to try the fried ones that are the only thing on the menu here...

Although his face does not seem too happy, we loved the Fried Dumplings! A little hard to eat because the bottom is somewhat hard from the frying.  We made a mess, but who cares, they are staring at us for being white and being in this place anyway!

It truly was worth the adventure and the wait for these delish treats!  We will definitely go back to Yang's!
